Getting started

Set the app up the way you like it before you sit down at a table.

Pick your language

HangJack is available in English and Spanish. The choice is yours, not your phone's — the app never switches on you.

  1. Open the menu, then tap Settings.

  2. Tap General.

  3. Under User Interface, tap Language.

  4. Pick English or Español.

Take the tour

First time in? A short guided tour points out the lobby, the people list and the leaderboard.

  1. The tour starts on its own the first time you open the lobby.

  2. Tap Next to move through it, or Skip to leave it.

  3. You can always come back to the guided lessons from the menu under Learn to play.

Your profile and account

Your name, avatar, flag and every account action live in one sheet.

  1. Open the menu, then tap Settings.

  2. The top of the sheet shows your avatar, username and email.

  3. Tap the pencil beside your name to rename yourself.

  4. Further down are General, Theme, Game and About & Support, plus Log out of other devices, Delete my account and Sign Out.

Change your avatar

Pick a face from the built-in set, or clear it back to your initial.

  1. Open Settings from the menu.

  2. Tap the pencil on your avatar.

  3. Scroll the Person grid and tap the one you want.

  4. Remove avatar clears it again.

Pick your flag

The flag beside your name shows other players where you're playing from.

  1. Open Settings from the menu.

  2. Tap the small flag button beside your avatar.

  3. Search, or scroll to your country — the Caribbean group is listed first.

  4. Tap a flag to set it.

The lobby

Where you find a table, find a player, or start something yourself.

Get around the lobby

Three tabs across the top, the game buttons at the bottom, and four tools along the bottom bar.

  1. Tables lists games you can join or watch.

  2. People shows who's online right now.

  3. Leaders is the leaderboard.

  4. The bottom bar holds Filter tables, My Community, Tell a friend and Chat.

Read a table at a glance

Each row tells you the win condition, who's sitting, and whether you can join or only watch.

  1. The heading — for example First to 14 — is the win condition.

  2. Avatars are seated players; a + is an empty seat you can take.

  3. A small ghost on a seat means a Jumbee is filling it.

  4. The eyes button watches the game; the play button joins it.

Filter the table list

Narrow the list down to the games you actually want to play.

  1. Tap Filter Tables in the bottom bar.

  2. Turn All Fours and Twos on or off.

  3. Pick a time control: Fast, Medium, Relaxed or No Limit.

  4. Use Show in-progress and Friends only to trim the list further, then tap Done.

The main menu

Everything that isn't the lobby hangs off the menu button in the top right.

  1. Tap the menu button at the top right.

  2. Home, My Community, My Stats and Games and Offline games cover play.

  3. Learn to play, Scoreboard, Tell a friend, Rate this app and About are below.

  4. Your name at the top opens Settings; Sign Out is directly beneath it.

See your stats

Ratings, wins, losses and streaks, split by variant.

  1. Open the menu and tap My Stats and Games.

  2. Switch between All Fours and Twos for each variant's record.

  3. Offline games in the menu keeps your solo history separately.

Playing online

Joining a table, making your own, and what the table controls do.

Start a game

Tap a game button in the lobby and you get three ways in.

  1. Tap All Fours or Twos at the bottom of the lobby.

  2. Quick Join drops you into an open table, or makes one if there isn't a suitable one.

  3. Create Table lets you set the rules yourself.

  4. Play with Jumbees starts an offline game against the app.

Create your own table

Three tabs — rules, people and Jumbees — then Start.

  1. From the start dialog, tap Create Table.

  2. On the gear tab, pick a time control and choose whether the dealer is decided by 1st Jack or at Random.

  3. Turn on the house rules you want: Tobago Rules, Must beg without trump, Undertrumping and Kick win.

  4. Set Game to 1pt or 2pts, then tap Start.

Invite people to your table

Open the table to anyone, keep it invite-only, or pull specific players in.

  1. On the people tab of Create Table, choose Invite Only or Anyone.

  2. Turn Spectators on if you're happy for others to watch.

  3. Search under Add Person and tap a name to invite them.

Fill empty seats with Jumbees

Jumbees are the app's players. They fill seats so a game can start or carry on.

  1. On the ghost tab of Create Table, turn Jumbees on.

  2. Drag Jumbee Difficulty to set how hard they play.

  3. Fill with jumbee on leave keeps the game going if someone drops out.

Watch a game

Any table with the eyes button open can be watched without sitting down.

  1. In the lobby, tap the eyes button on a table.

  2. You see the trick and the score, but not anyone's hand.

  3. Leave with the gear menu, the same as a player would.

The table gear menu

The gear at the top left of a table holds everything you might need mid-game.

  1. Tap the gear at the top left of the table.

  2. Info and Table show what the table is set to.

  3. Cards, Signals and Gameplay are your own settings, changeable mid-game.

  4. Refresh re-syncs a table that looks stuck; Leave Table exits; Report an issue flags a problem.

Playing a hand

Begging, standing, and playing your cards.

Beg or stand

After the deal, the player to the dealer's left decides whether to accept the turned-up trump.

  1. Look at your hand and the turned-up card.

  2. Tap Stand to accept that suit as trump and play on.

  3. Tap Beg to ask for a different trump. The dealer either gives you a point or deals again.

  4. If you don't decide in time, the app stands for you.

Play your cards

Cards you're allowed to play are bright; the rest are dimmed.

  1. When it's your turn, playable cards light up and the others go grey.

  2. Tap a card to play it.

  3. The card led sits in the middle; the trump card sits at the top right.

  4. Your team's score is the red box, the other team's is blue.

When the game ends

The winners are shown with a trophy, and you choose what happens next.

  1. The winning pair appears under a trophy once someone reaches the target score.

  2. Play again starts a fresh game with the same players.

  3. Review Games walks back through the hands that were played.

  4. Leave returns you to the lobby.

Learning the game

Guided lessons and offline practice, no opponents needed.

Take a lesson

Eight short interactive lessons that cover All Fours from the deal to throwing in.

  1. Open the menu and tap Learn to play.

  2. Start tutorial runs them in order, or tap any single lesson.

  3. The lessons are Intro, Deal and Kick, Beg or stand, Playing, Scoring, Signalling, Throwing in and Practice offline.

Practise with prompts

A real table with coaching bubbles that tell you what to do and why.

  1. Pick a lesson from Learn to play.

  2. Play the hand as prompted — the bubble explains each step.

  3. Tap Next to go on or Back to re-read a step.

Play offline against Jumbees

A full game against the app — no connection needed once it starts.

  1. Tap a game button in the lobby, then Play with Jumbees.

  2. Tap a Jumbee to swap it for another from the row below.

  3. Set the house rules the same way as an online table.

  4. Tap Start Playing.

People and partners

Finding players, teaming up, and keeping unwanted company away.

See who's online

The People tab lists everyone in the lobby with their rating in each variant.

  1. Tap People at the top of the lobby.

  2. A green dot means online now; orange means recently active.

  3. Go takes you to the table that player is sitting at.

  4. Use Search lobby users… at the bottom to find someone by name.

Look someone up

Tap a name for their record, and for the four things you can do about them.

  1. Tap any player in the People tab.

  2. Message opens a direct message; Favourite adds them to your list.

  3. Block and Mute keep them away from you.

  4. vs You shows your head-to-head record against them.

Partner up

All Fours is a partner game — pair up before you join a table together.

  1. Find the player in the People tab and tap Partner.

  2. Confirm with Partner in the dialog.

  3. Once they accept, you're seated as partners at your next table.

Groups

A private corner of the app for you and your regular crowd.

Create a group

A group is a private space with its own tables and its own chat.

  1. Tap My Community in the lobby's bottom bar.

  2. Go to Groups, then My Groups, and tap Create Group.

  3. Give it a name, up to 25 characters.

  4. Leave Public group off to keep it invite-only, or turn it on so anyone can find and request to join. Tap Create.

Invite members

Two ways in: by username, or with a link you send however you like.

  1. Open the group and tap the add-person button in the bottom bar.

  2. On By Username, type at least two characters and pick the people you want.

  3. Tap Send Invites.

  4. Share Link gives you a link to send instead.

Play inside a group

Group tables are only visible to members.

  1. Open the group and stay on the Tables tab.

  2. Tap All Fours or Twos under Start a group game.

  3. The table appears for group members only.

  4. Members shows who's in, and the chat button opens the group's own chat.

Chat and messages

Talking to the lobby, to a group, or to one person.

Chat in the lobby

One room, everyone in the lobby, visible to all.

  1. Tap the chat button at the bottom right of the lobby.

  2. Type in the box at the bottom and tap send.

  3. Show Chat under Settings › General hides it if you'd rather not see it.

Send a direct message

A private thread with one player.

  1. Tap the bell, then the Messages tab.

  2. Search under New message to… and pick a player.

  3. You can also start one from Message on a player's profile.

Your notifications

Invites, requests and replies all land in the bell.

  1. Tap the bell in the top bar.

  2. Notifications holds table invites, partner requests and group invites.

  3. Messages holds your direct message threads.

  4. Tap a notification to act on it.

Settings and appearance

Make the table look and behave the way you want.

Change the theme

Several colour schemes, plus one that follows your phone.

  1. Open Settings from the menu and tap Theme.

  2. Tap any theme to apply it straight away.

  3. The moon button in the top bar is a quick light/dark toggle.

Card appearance

Change how the cards themselves look.

  1. Open Settings › Game › Cards, or use Cards in the table gear menu.

  2. Adjust the card style and back.

  3. Changes apply immediately, including mid-game.

Partner signals

The traditional All Fours table signals, so you can tell your partner what you're holding.

  1. Open Settings › Game › Signals, or use Signals in the table gear menu.

  2. Each signal maps a gesture to a message — for example *I hold the ace of trump*, *I hold High and Low of trump*, or *my hand is worthless*.

  3. Drag a signal by its handle to reorder the list.

  4. During a game, send one from the signal button at the table.

Gameplay settings

How the table behaves on your turn.

  1. Open Settings › Game › Gameplay, or use Gameplay in the table gear menu.

  2. Set how cards are played and sorted, and whether hints are shown.

  3. Turn turn sounds and vibration on or off.

When something goes wrong

How to get a stuck game moving, and how to tell us about it.

Report a problem

Flag a game that misbehaved so it can be looked at.

  1. Tap the gear at the top left of the table, then Report an issue.

  2. Pick a reason: Game got stuck, Game got out of sync, Animations wrong, Game won't start, Wrong players, Abuse or harassment or Other.

  3. Tap Report. The report carries the table's own record of what happened, so there's nothing else you need to write down.
