Partnerships and trump

Four players form two teams, with partners sitting across from one another. All Fours uses a standard 52-card deck. Each player starts with six cards, and the dealer turns over a card to propose the trump suit.

The first player can stand to accept trump or beg for a change. If the dealer refuses the beg, the begging team receives one point. If the dealer agrees, more cards are dealt until the trump suit changes.

Playing a hand

Play proceeds counterclockwise. Follow the suit led if you can, or play trump. If you have no card of the suit led, you can play any card. The highest trump wins the trick; without trump, the highest card of the suit led wins.

Scoring

The first team to 14 points wins. At the end of a hand, score High, Low, Jack, and Game in that order.

  • High: one point for the team dealt the highest trump.
  • Low: one point for the team dealt the lowest trump.
  • Jack: one point for keeping your trump Jack, or three points for capturing the opposing team's trump Jack.
  • Game: one point for capturing the greater total value of game cards.
